Went to the Serra exhibit at MoMA and was both overwhelmed and underwhelmed. His early work is interesting from the historical point of view, but lacks the feeling of his sculptural work with steel which force interaction upon the viewer.

I actually really enjoyed seeing the early work for the first time and more fully understanding how he arrived at the rolled surface sculptures. Materiality, fabircation, balance and composition were all very strong elements that he has continued to explore and push with his newer work. The biggest difference, at least to my mind, is the jump in scale and freedom and form. His work has moved from inhabiting a gallery space to becoming a gallery space, from viewed to occupied which, has allowed his work to transcend just "sculpture". I was very impressed with the exhibit.

Also, how the HELL did they get the 8' long, 4' high x 8" thick solid steel forms to the upper gallery?? Not the elevator!
